If you are not already familiar with Microsoft 365 Business (or M365 Business) then you should take a few minutes out of your day to take a look at it. This is fast becoming the default subscription choice for any business looking to do more than just Office 365 Business Premium. Often there is a complex task of trying to pick the most suitable base license such as Business Premium and then deciding which add-ons would be required on top of this? This could include Azure AD Premium, Intune, Advanced Threat Protection and so on which can quickly add up to a high license cost per user per month. The M365 Business license is a fantastic bundle of integrated security and device management features, let me explain why….
In a nutshell you will get Office 365 Business edition which can be deployed on up to 5 devices per user. You will get Advanced Threat Protection Plan 2, Microsoft Intune for device and mobile application management and Azure Information Protection Plan 1 for classifying and protection documents and emails.
You get OS upgrade rights, that is the ability to upgrade your existing Windows Pro devices to Windows 10. This will also include user licensing to access Windows Virtual Desktop which is an exciting new Azure service expected early next year.
Recently Microsoft announced that M365 Business now includes Shared Computer Activation. This is a very important feature for anyone using shared devices including Remote Desktop Services as it allows multiple users to sign in to Office 365 on a shared computer or RDS session host. This was previously only possible with a ProPlus license which meant users were required to have Office 365 E3 licenses.
There was still one thing that was missing from the M365 Business license plan however and that’s Azure AD Premium. Although this is still not fully included, Microsoft have listened to demand and yesterday announced that M365 Business would now include perhaps the most important feature of Azure AD Premium – Conditional Access.
Conditional Access is a set of policies you can implement in your organisation to control access to your systems and data based on a set of who, where and when conditions. Probably the most popular conditional access policy that organisations implement is to enforce multi-factor authentication only when users are signing in from a non-trusted location, always known as IP whitelisting. This simple but effective policy is a cornerstone of how modern businesses secure their data but to implement it is normally an additional license cost on top of that base license plan I mentioned earlier. Now that this feature has been included in M365 Business on top of all these other great features I’ve mentioned already it can now truly be considered as a complete license plan for the modern business.
